Public relations staff members work to achieve maximum visibility in the media to build public awareness for Buffalo State and its outstanding academic programs, activities, and people. Buffalo State’s PR specialists obtain coverage in local, state, and national newspapers, magazines, television, and radio stations as well as online media outlets. The PR staff also plays a central role in crisis communications and special-events planning.
Faculty, staff, and departments are not permitted to issue press releases or contact the media on their own as representatives of Buffalo State. All such efforts must be coordinated through a public relations staff member in College Relations. Exceptions to this rule are limited to Intercollegiate Athletics, the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall, the Research Foundation at Buffalo State, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State. Contact College Relations if you are uncertain about your area within the institution.
The public relations staff is available to assist faculty and staff members in achieving news coverage for appropriate events, conferences, achievements, or grants through a variety of tactics such as press releases, media alerts, or informal pitches. Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit achievements, events, and announcements to the College Relations Office.
All interview requests for Buffalo State’s administration, faculty, and staff must be coordinated through a member of the public relations team.
In most cases, reporters will contact a public relations staff member to identify a source and coordinate an interview. In advance of an interview, a member of the public relations team will contact the requested faculty or staff member to discuss talking points and anticipated questions. If a reporter or journalist contacts you directly, please consult with a public relations staff member before agreeing to an interview. Simply explain to an inquiring reporter that you would be happy to speak with him or her, but request that the reporter contact a PR staff member to coordinate the interview.
Formal half-day media-training sessions are scheduled annually to prepare select faculty and staff members who regularly interact with the news media. Please contact a PR staff member if you would like to be included in a future session.
