In conjunction with Human Resource Management and Equity and Campus Diversity, the College Relations Office is responsible for the production of recruitment (employment) advertising for the college. College Relations secures advertising space through Graystone Group, an advertising placement agency selected by SUNY. Graystone negotiates pricing and advertising space in publications on behalf of Buffalo State.
A minimum of five to seven days is required to develop, approve, and place an advertisement. Be aware of journal and newspaper deadlines, which can sometimes be as long as two months. Departments generally pay for their own recruitment advertising, and advertisements are placed only upon receipt of a signed and approved Position Release/Recruitment Plan (PR/RP) form and an employee recruitment ad production sheet.
Recruitment ads are worded exactly as stated on the PR/RP form and placed in only those publications listed on the form. Ads are edited only for editorial style or brevity.
Recruitment ad costs are determined by word count. Lengthy position descriptions cost more to advertise. Departments that wish to reduce costs are advised to keep job descriptions to a minimum, keep preferred qualifications as brief as possible, and carefully consider the cost of advertising in various publications. A typical faculty recruitment ad that contains 225 words costs $1,300 (display ad) or $880 (line ad) to run in the Chronicle of Higher Education; $895 (display-only available) to run in Diverse Issues in Higher Education; and $1,890 (display ad) or $1,033 (line ad) to run in the Buffalo News. Web advertising is considerably lower. A web ad (any size) is $260 in the Chronicle of Higher Ed, $210 in Diverse Issues. (Prices listed are examples only; 2011 pricing; costs subject to change.)
Advertising is billed against the account indicated on the employee recruitment ad production sheet signed by the search and department chairs. College Relations does not place discipline, electronic, or Internet Listserv advertisements; these must be placed by the department or search committee. Care must be taken to copy the exact wording for these ads from the approved PR/RP.
